Spiritual discipline is a means to regulate and develop the spirit that Allah the Almighty breathed into man.

Man consists of body and spirit. When the spirit is weak, the body dominates the spirit and man becomes similar to animals. He becomes a slave and prisoner of the desires of food, drink, sex, sleep and other sensual desires. The spirit withers and withers, and is defeated and dragged to the ground. Therefore, man falls to the lowest depths and lives only to satisfy his physical needs, which limits his aspirations and hopes only to this earth and worldly life. It becomes like the careless people who do not see beyond the sight of their sensual eyes, because their hearts have been stained and covered by a veil because of their works.

When the spirit is strong, it overcomes the body, leads man to goodness in both worlds and saves him from extremism and neglect. When the spirit dominates, it does not curb the desires of the body or spoil it. Rather, it leads to the body in a way that reforms it. Therefore, one surrenders to Allah, the Almighty, who breathed the spirit into him; therefore, it is far from acquiring features similar to animals and achieves the task for which it was created, which is the succession on earth.

Islam pays special attention to the spirit, since it is the means of connecting it with Allah the Almighty. Worship is the most effective way to discipline the spirit. Worship makes one always connected with Allah the Almighty. The main purpose of many acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, Hajj and Zakaah (compulsory charity), is to establish a permanent relationship between the slave and his Lord and maintain this strong and firm relationship. It is from the favors of Allaah the Almighty over man that some acts of worship are performed daily (such as prayers), others annually (such as fasting) and a third category that is required only once in a lifetime, like Hajj The acts of worship in essence are opportunities to maintain a strong and firm relationship between the slave and his Lord. The role of Hajj is to refine the soul and strengthen its connection with Allaah the Almighty and carry it with the consciousness of Allaah the Almighty.

The role of Hajj in the spiritual discipline

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was asked: "What is the best action?" He replied: "Have faith in Allaah and in His Messenger."
